Mel Robbins’s 5 Second Rule
Mel Robbins 5 Second Rule:
Today I listened to an awesome podcast from the show School of Greatness featuring Mel Robbins called “The 5 Second Rule to Change Your Life” after my friends Natalia and Cailin feeding me some of her tidbits. They are two of my biggest inspirations, so I got right to listening! As usual, they didn’t steer me wrong. Here are some key takeaways and quotes:
🤸🏼♀️You are not a worrier, you have a habit of worrying
🤸🏼♀️Interrupt and replace habits using SCIENCE
🤸🏼♀️You’re not going to change your like “up here” (in your head)- you change your life through action
🤸🏼♀️You can’t control the things that trigger you, but you CAN always interrupt that feeling and take control in the moment and actually shift what you’re thinking and the way you’re behaving
🤸🏼♀️Anxiety is nothing more than the habit of worrying spiraling out of control.
🤸🏼♀️Cue, 5 second rule!
engages prefrontal cortex
Interrupts habitual thinking
Discovered by Mel Robbins (by mistake–explained in pod)
🤸🏼♀️You think you need to feel confident or courageous in order to get started. You don’t. You actually just have to start.
🤸🏼♀️You have to learn how to take action when you don’t feel like it.
🤸🏼♀️You don’t make decisions with your goals. You don’t make decisions with you prefrontal cortex. We make decisions with FEELINGS. And that is the problem. We will wait until we FEEL like it. And we won’t always feel like it! We hate discomfort and are averse to pain.
🤸🏼♀️Making decisions based on feelings robs us of joy and opportunity.
🤸🏼♀️How you change your live is one 5 second decision at a time. One push at a time.
🤸🏼♀️You can change your life in 5 seconds. The moment you feel called to act (*sometimes theres a need for discernment/hesitation, but often we hesitate when we shouldn’t*), count down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 & go!
